Winter accident protection

By The Orchard Practice

The cold and icy conditions of winter bring with them a greater risk of people injuring themselves when out and about.

Outside risks

Now the wintry weather has come round, roads and paths will get wet and icy, turning them into potential health hazards. You can help to avoid an accident while out and about in bad conditions by trying to keep to flat surfaces and avoiding any slippery or uneven ground. Remember, other people will be experiencing the same conditions as you, so be aware of your surroundings at all times otherwise you could become a victim of someone else’s misfortune!

The best thing to consider with these conditions is stick to terrain you know well and be prepared with the most appropriate clothing. If you do need to go outside, make sure you’re wearing sensible footwear that gives you grip and helps prevent you from slipping.

Accidents at home

While you might think it’s safer to stay indoors to avoid an accident, more than two million children under the age of 15 are taken to Accident and Emergency units as a result of an accident in the home.

Among these, the most at risk age group are the 0-4 year olds (as you might expect) but with better awareness and improvements to your home environment many of the accidents can be prevented.

The most common cause of injury is simply falling – either from a height or tripping over something on the ground. Make sure you remove any potential trip hazards, especially on the stairs, and be around to supervise your youngsters if they’re climbing on furniture or playing in the house.

Covering your bills

Injuring yourself at home or while out and about could lead to you being off work and not earning an income. This is where an accident protection policy will help as it provides a lump sum which can help take care of the bills while you take care of yourself.

If you’d like the peace of mind that you will be covered in the event of an accident this winter, give me a call to find the most appropriate cover for you.
